I have silver jewelry but I can't tell the sterling from the fake silver. is sterling silver magnetic and fake silver not, or is it the other way around?

real silver is dull and needs to be polished, because it tarnishes and turns black.(heavier in feel)
sterling is highly polished (and is usually lighter in feel)

no, the only metals attracted to a magnet are iron, cobalt, and nickel. "fake" silver, or silver colored metal will be magnetic (if it's iorn cobalt or nickel), sterling will not.
